Campbell County, settled in 1736 and incorporated in 1781, is located in Virginia’s south central Piedmont region in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The area is rich in both natural beauty and history.

Tobacco was the basis for the County’s early economic system.  Because of its location on the Staunton River, Brookneal served as a major tobacco market for many years. In addition to tobacco and other agricultural products, Campbell County has also been supported by manufacturing since its earliest days.  Oxford Iron Works (Oxford Furnace) was in operation even prior to the Revolutionary War.  The last remaining furnace, shut down in 1875, still stands as a testimony to the County’s early manufacturing operation.

Caroline County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of 2010, the population was 28,545. Its county seat is Bowling Green. Caroline County is also home to The Meadow stables, the birthplace of the renowned racehorse Secretariat, winner of the 1973 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes; the Triple Crown.

Caroline County was established in the British Colony of Virginia in 1728 from Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties. It was named for Caroline of Ansbach, the wife of King George II of Great Britain.

During the Colonial Period, Caroline County was the birthplace of Thoroughbred horse racing in North America. Arabian horses were imported from England to provide the basis for American breeding stock.

At the southern edge of the county, The Meadow, a farm originally established in 1810, became a premier facility for breeding, raising and training Thoroughbred race horses. In 1972, Riva Ridge, raised at The Meadow, won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, two of the three events of the Triple Crown. The following year, Secretariat, born at The Meadow, won the famous Triple Crown for the Chenery family’s Meadow Stable.

The county is also home to a quarry that has proved a rich source of pre-historic whale and shark skeletons. The whole county is located in what was in ancient times an ocean. It is known to palaentologists as the middle Miocene Calvert Formation of Virginia. A whale skeleton discovered there in 1990 was proved to be a new whale species (see Eobalaenoptera harrisoni).

Mattaponi Springs Golf Club is a world class golf design sculpted from 330 acres of wildly undulating countryside in historic Caroline County Virginia. After five years of meticulous planning and detailed development, Mattaponi has quickly become recognized as the premier golf destination in central Virginia. Mattaponi is conveniently located just a few miles from I-95 along the Richmond to Washington corridor.

Long, narrow and nearly level, the 934 acre Pettigrew Wildlife Management Area in Caroline County offers a broad range of opportunities. Hunting, hiking and it’s diversity of upland and wetland habitats appeal to an array of outdoor interests. There are two designated parking areas. Trails near the center of the area and along the eastern perimeter provide access to the area by foot. Hunting includes deer, dove, turkey and squirrel which are the most abundant game species. Quail, woodcock and ducks are present in small numbers. Ware Creek offers limited fishing opportunity for herring during spawning runs in the nearby Rappahannock river, and for largemouth bass and crappie.

In Nearby Doswell, Kings Dominion is Virginia’s only combined water and ride park where guests can ride or slide in the same location. Coaster lovers will enjoy the East Coast’s largest collection of roller coasters with 15 coasters, including Intimidator 305, voted one of the best new coaster in 2010.
