Google-PROPERTY MAP

Description: This is a nice level and wooded lot, roughly a half acre or a little less, in the Oak Hill Estates of Abingdon VA.  From here, it is only a six minute drive to Interstate 81 and 12 minutes to Downtown Abingdon.  In under a half hour you can reach the North Carolina border and South Holston Lake.  This is a convenient location in a well-developed neighborhood.  There is also plenty of commercial development in the area, including an airport and a Drive In Movie Theatre, and for the ladies, there is a large shoe store very close to the property.

In Abingdon, history can be found within the record books of the Washington County Courthouse, in the cemeteries dating before the Revolution, in the homes throughout the historic district, and dedicated markers.  It was chartered in 1778 and is one of the oldest towns west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Today, local amenities include the Virginia Highlands Festival – one of the top 100 tourist events in North America.  Abingdon itself has been named as one of the best 100 small towns for the arts in the United States!  Beauty, history and amenities are just a few of the many reasons you’ll want to live in or around Abingdon.

Named after George Washington, the County is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the far western part of the Blue Ridge Highlands region of Virginia.  The world famous Barter Theater in Abingdon has delighted audiences for more than 50 years.  It is part of the Abingdon Historic District, which is a Virginia Historic Landmark.  Another attraction in this 20-square block district is the William King Regional Arts Center, an affiliate of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Arts Depot.

Washington County is home to the Virginia Creeper Trail in Damascus, also known as “Trail Town USA.” You can get close to nature in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, as well.  The county is one of the sites along The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.

A major part of Washington County is in the Great Valley region of Virginia, where Abingdon, the County Seat, was established.  The town is located near the Blue Ridge Mountains in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian range in Southwest Virginia.  Visiting Native Americans thought of the area as sacred ground and found it so rich in natural beauty that they never settled or hunted here.  Today it’s served by State Highway 19 and nestled alongside Interstate 81.

To the north are the North Fork of the Holston River and the Clinch mountain range; to the south and east are River Knobs, the junction of the Middle Fork and the South Fork of the Holston River, and the mountain ranges known as the Holston and the Virginia Iron.  The combination of springs and elevation provided waterpower, harnessed behind small dams for milling grains and for sawing lumber from the abundant stands of trees.  Grayson, Smyth, and Washington Counties join at the top of the second highest mountain (5,520 feet) in Virginia formerly known as “Meadow”, because of its prominent bald field. Winter snows in that open field have caused the change of its name to White Top Mountain.
