Nelson County is a county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of 2010, the population was 15,020. Its county seat is Lovingston. It is also home to Wintergreen Resort, a local ski area; Swannanoa mansion; and is the location of Walton’s Mountain made famous by the television show, The Waltons. Nelson County is also home to many thriving vineyards, three craft breweries, a cidery, a whiskey distillery, and Crabtree Falls.

Nelson County was created in 1807, when it was separated from Amherst County. The government was formed the following year. The county is named for Thomas Nelson, Jr., a signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, who served as Governor of Virginia in 1781. An earlier Virginia county, also named in his honor, became part of Kentucky when it separated from Virginia in 1792.

Nelson County is in the Central Virginia region midway between Charlottesville and Lynchburg and is bounded by the James River on east and the Blue Ridge Mountains north and west. It’s home to orchards, wineries and the 10,800-acreWintergreen Resort, a year-around resort offering downhill skiing, mountain biking, horseback riding, golf and tennis. It is one of only five resorts south of New York to offer a 1,000-foot vertical drop!

Wintergreen Resort is a four-season mountain retreat on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This beautiful hideaway is the ultimate vacation and conference spot, with 45 holes of championship golf; seasonal skiing, snowboarding and snowtubing; an award-winning tennis program; a full-service, destination spa; 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space; charming lodging; and a variety of enticing dining options. The resort is located on 11,000 lush acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains southwest of Charlottesville, minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, less than two hours from Richmond and three hours from Washington, D.C.

Crabtree Falls, the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River, is a popular attraction located in Nelson County, just six miles off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway near milepost 27. Crabtree Falls features a series of five major cascades and a number of smaller ones that fall a total distance of 1,200 feet. The first overlook is just a few hundred feet from the parking lot along a gentle, paved trail making it an excellent stopover for travelers of all ages and abilities. The more adventuresome hiker may continue along the 3-mile trail to four other overlooks offering spectacular views of the Crabtree Creek Falls and lovely vistas of the Tye River Valley. From the upper falls, the trail follows the creek another 1.2 miles to the Crabtree Meadows.

The Walton’s Museum, in Nelson County is a special blend of history, nostalgia and entertainment. The same building young Earl Hamner, Jr. attended school, now houses replicas of sets from the The Waltons, the memorable television series he created. Step back in time and memory to John-Boy’s bedroom, the Waltons’ kitchen and living room and Ike Godsey’s store, which also serves as the museum’s gift shop.
