Richmond County is a county located on the Northern Neck in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of 2010, the population was 9,254. Its county seat is Warsaw. The rural county should not be confused with the large city and state capital Richmond, Virginia, which is over an hour’s drive away.

Warsaw is the county seat of Richmond County.  The original name of the town was Richmond Courthouse. In 1831 the town’s name was changed to Warsaw, after the news of the bloody Battle of Warsaw reached local residents. A number of other small towns in the United States changed their names to Warsaw at this time (Warsaw, Kentucky for instance), all as a result of sympathy in the United States for the November Uprising in Poland. Because Richmond Courthouse was still unincorporated in 1830, it is unclear who was responsible for the change of name to Warsaw. A former plantation estate Belle Mount is currently operated as a vineyard and winery within a few miles of Warsaw town limits.

In addition to Menokin, Mounty Airy, and Sabine Hall, Grove Mount and the Richmond County Courthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The formerly listed Bladensfield was dIn 2004 the Menokin Bluegrass Festival was launched in Richmond County at the ruins of Francis Lightfoot Lee’s (a signer of the Declaration of Independence) ancestral home, Menokin (later changed to Menokin Music Festival). The festival attracts thousands of music fans every year in a celebration of the Northern Neck’s historical legacy.estroyed by fire in 1996.

The Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located along the Rappahannock River near Warsaw, Virginia; one of four refuges that comprise the Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex, it was established under the jurisdiction of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in 1996. As of 2008, the Refuge consisted of 8,191 acres of property total. It consists of numerous non-contiguous units along the Rappahannock River in King George, Caroline, Essex, Westmoreland, and Richmond counties.
